The corkscrew ramp is all that remains of the nearly demolished Cedar Rapids, Iowa, parking ramp that was damaged in the major flood of 2008 that caused far-reaching damage up and down the Cedar River basin.
In the background, Veteran's Memorial Building stands on May's Island. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the May's Island Historic district, the building was also damaged by the flood. As a result, Cedar Rapids moved its government offices from the Veteran's Memorial Building and is no longer one of the few cities in the world which, like Paris, France, have their government sited on an island.
